WHO ARE WE?
CHAMP is a bridge providing tangible mentorship between Arsenal Middle School Students, University of Pittsburgh Medical Students, and our UPMC/Pitt faculty. Both medical students and middle school students receive mentorship. We host educational events and curriculums throughout the school year at Arsenal, with a wide variety of subjects from CPR Education to Black History Trivia and Career Day. Our community partners and Pitt Med students attend these events as volunteers and allies. Additionally, Pitt Med students receive mentorship through physician mentor matches and attending our various Lunch & Learn sessions focusing on topics from Imposter Syndrome to First Generation Physicians.
OUR MISSION:
Encourage and support middle school students on their path to achieving levels of higher education and to support URiM (underrepresented in medicine) medical students in the mentorship process as they give back to younger learners through community involvement and mentoring. We aim to cultivate sustainable mentoring relationships, promote community involvement, and increase and strengthen the pipeline for students in Pittsburgh.
TANGIBLE MENTORSHIP:
CHAMP is committed to developing long-lasting mentorships.
- Pitt Med students receive mentorship at monthly Lunch & Learn events, financial wellness seminars, and more!

Events and Curriculums
at Arsenal Middle School
Flagship Events:

"Save a Life Day"
Each year we host a curriculum in partnership with UPMC physicians, the AHA, and Pitt medical students to provide education and hands-on training to Arsenal Middle School students for CPR, First Aid, and Stop the Bleed. The novel curriculum focuses on awareness, social responsibility, and basic hands-on training.

Bi-Annual Wellness Boxes
In May and December, we curate "Wellness Boxes" for the students based on need. We provide items such as hygiene products, hats and socks for the winter, summer fun games, and even a travel mug with hot chocolate and instant soup packets for these cold Pittsburgh winters.
Annual Coat Drive
80% of the children that attend this school have economic hardships and are unable to find resources to provide warmth for the winter. The amazing UPMC CHP ED Nurses have been facilitating this coat drive for years, and CHAMP is happy to now partner with them.
Safety Reflectors
CHAMP supports the distribution of safety reflectors each winter for students to put on their backpacks, so they are safe walking to/from school in the dark.

"Doc Talks"
Our participating Medical Students are given the opportunity to join Ms. Maddex in her Science classes during daily curriculum throughout the year. Med Students are encouraged to share their journey, answer questions, and take part in the education and fun of science class!

PNC Park Day
Each day we take the 8th grade class to PNC Park to meet the players, watch the game, and join in the fun of PNC Park's Education Days!

Black History Trivia Bowl
We at CHAMP are excited to work with PGH HBCU Collaborative for Black History Month events at Arsenal Middle School! This year we will be hosting a Black Trivia Bowl, with the intent of using it to educate on Black history in HBCUs, STEM, healthcare, civil rights, and more!

International Night
Teachers and students "adopt a country" for the night with a table to represent their country with fun facts, student-made media, and finger foods, with incentives for students to engage in content and win prizes.

Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration
Each year we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. Guests discuss their career journeys, play educational games, give prizes, and foster a community of belonging.
2024 Guest speakers: Roberto Clemente Jr., Omar Khan, Dr. Diego Chaves-Gnecco, María Cecilia Q. Dancisin
"It is a great celebration full of joy and pride. We celebrate with the students our cultural roots, our costumes, our values. We look at the past, the present and the future. We look for dreams to come true. We are always left with a big smile and encouragement to continue the work that we do." Dr. Diego Chaves-Gnecco
