Top points for CPR instructional video (by Sylvia & Rickie)

  1. Video for providing effective teaching to middle school students for our instructors:

    • Prep- Be energetic. Talk with the teacher to ask for help to engage students and ask for any pointers since they know their students better than you. Set-up equipment so everyone can view

    • Introduction-- introduce yourself and go around the kids and ask what their favorite sport/ activity is. Set-up room to make sure all kids together and not have any child sitting far away

    • Ask students what C-P-R means and then provide definition

    • Ask students why it is important to learn CPR

      • Talk to students about cardiac arrest and what it means v heart attack

    • Ask students who knows how to perform CPR

    • Ask students if they have performed or seen someone perform CPR in front of them on a real-life person and how did they feel about it

      • Ask students if discussing CPR sparks a stress reaction or response

      • Allow for mental health break

    • Go over the steps prior to CPR

      • Scene safety

      • Look, Listen, Feel (no pulse check)

      • Call 911 (speakerphone if alone, assign someone if not alone)

      • It is okay to do CPR on women

    • Now let's get ready to learn how to perform CPR-- Hand placement location on body, compression depth with full weight and leaning on top of body, rate (play song), no pulse check

      • rotate each student to perform. May start with student volunteer to demonstrate first

    • Verbally repeat the steps leading up to CPR

    • CPR competition teams perform for 5 minutes. Split into 2 or more teams and watch who can keep it going to save a life (play song)

    • Close with asking who knows how to perform CPR now (all hands should be raised) and then ask who feels like they can save a life

      • have students verbally repeat

  2. Video for teachers to have to provide education to students that can be used universally:

    • Welcome students and teachers for CPR education

    • Breakdown the meaning of cardiac arrest

      • Note the difference between cardiac arrest and heart attack

    • Breakdown meaning and importance of CPR

      • Also in relation to cardiac arrest

    • Go over the basic steps leading to performing CPR

      • Scene safety

      • Recognize patient is not conscious or agonal breathing (we DO NOT check a pulse with bystander CPR)

        • Look, Listen, Feel

      • Empower students at this point they can help by:

        • Calling 911 (place on speaker if alone, assign someone to call is not alone

          • 911 will help you preform CPR until help arrives

        • Performing bystander (chest compression only) CPR

        • Explain how to do CPR on women and why it is okay

    • Have a student show how to properly position hands and where to place the mannequin/ body and perform compressions.

    • Have student teach another student about CPR

    • Interweave pauses in the videos for teachers to perform the instruction with their students.

    • Allow for mental health breaks for students who may be triggered from the trauma of CPR in previous situations.

10/23 meeting with UPMC marketing for Save a Life Day

  • We are hoping to standardize teaching methods.

  • Two separate videos

    • instructor education - instructing individuals on how to instruct students

    • student education

    • instructor teaches student, then student teaches another student

  • Outcomes: number of students we train and champions we recruit

  • note: maintain expectations of middle school students performing CPR.

    • Focus has been cognitive connection. empower them to do something

    • Recognize the aspect of addressing students' trauma and triggers

    • Need to focus on keeping students engaged
